HeartBEAT

The future of cardiac pacing.

The Need

Over 1 million pacemakers are implanted worldwide each year 1. Leadless pacemakers, such as the Medtronic Micra AV, are fully implantable and, therefore, increase patient comfort; however, the decreased size also causes a decreased lifespan, increasing the frequency of replacement surgeries to every 8-13 years on average2.

Surgeries involve risk of infection or cardiac perforation3. Increasing the battery life of the pacemaker would allow for increased patient comfort by decreasing the frequency of pacemaker insertion surgeries and office visits and decreasing patient risks.

Product

In order to combat the short lifespan of the Medtronic Micra AV pacemaker, our cardiac energy harvesting device converts mechanical energy created by the heart into electrical energy to recharge the pacemaker.

The Design

Our design includes a sleeve to encase the pacemaker and electronic circuit, two magnets whose attraction allows them to move synchronously, a copper coil around the sleeve and between the magnets, and a stent to move the magnets. The movement of the magnets induce a current in the coil to recharge the pacemaker.

With the global and U.S. pacemaker market growing every year, our device has increasing market opportunities. The leadless pacemaker market is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 10.0%5 and have a global market value of over 50 million USD in the next few years6. We hope to market our device along with these pacemakers by partnering with Medtronic, Abbot Laboratories, and EBR Systems Inc.7.

By marketing our product to physicians and hospitals we will have a continuous stream of new customers. Our device coupled with a leadless pacemaker will last up to 26 years, allowing for decreased physician visits and surgeries. Though our device is intended for a one time purchase, repurchase will be an option for patients who enjoyed our device’s performance and would like to ensure the longevity of their pacemaker. In the future we hope to expand our technology to other cardiac implantable devices, making our device more marketable.
